OLE!

February 12, 2009

We went to a bullfight about 2 weeks ago. All I can say is it's barbaric. I mean really, first they stab the bull BEFORE putting him in the ring. Then they have a bunch of matadors confuse him with nice bright capes and make him run around the ring 'til he's out of breath. After that some guys on horses parade around and they stab him too, or does that come BEFORE the matadors run him - can't remember. But wait, that's not enough... then they have some guy with swords pierce, 2 swords at a time for a total of 4. When ALL that is done then they send out the solo matador to tease the poor bull a bit more before driving a sword through his shoulder blades. I mean really now, that's not even close to a fair fight!

This is the bullfight arena. See that big apartment building in the background...

They have the best view, gratis, aka "free".

Pomp and circumstance before the fight.

Oh yeah, more fair play. They have a place to hide... CHICKENS!

Lookin' like a tough guy huh? NOT! Watch the video below. All that hissing from the crowd is not applause it's anger at the matador for being scared. And basically because he stunk and the bull would have had him for dinner had the other matadors not stepped in!

Video of shame

Dinner anyone?

This matador is from Spain and a favorite of the crowd. I will give him credit for putting on a good show and controlling the situation the whole time while maintaining dangerously close proximity to Mr. Angry Bull. And I included this shot because it was one heck of a lucky shot! That's him driving a long sword into the bulls shoulders. Check out the body contortion and his feet completely off the ground!

they have bull fighting here too, but we were told it is different, bull vs. bull instead of bull vs. man

The portuguese also love a good bull fight. I refuse to go every year. Last year they finally stopped after some complaints. There is no need for the "show" anymore. And you are right, in a fair fight the bull wins, hands down.

I was 19 when I lived in Spain, and I was so disgusted with this national past time that I left. I couldn't stomach it when I realized what all the OLE was about and how they were rewarded for such gruesome things. I literally left the arena it was so unsettling.

I don't think anyone has any idea of the feeling of being surrounded by barbarians (sorry but true) until they're there.
Good for you for going though!
