British Government says...

Found this on the travel advisory webpage from the British Government concerning Paraguay. If only I read that BEFORE our road trip to Encarnacion! Ah well, it was quite the adventure :o)

Safety and Security - Local Travel - Road Travel Paraguay's network of surfaced main roads is limited and of variable condition. There is an ongoing programme to upgrade the major routes but minor roads remain unsurfaced and often become impassable during heavy rains. Large potholes are an additional hazard, particularly in the highway to the Mennonite Colonies in the Chaco region and in Asunción. Exercise extreme caution when driving on country roads at night as unlit vehicles and cattle sleeping on the roads are common.

Rakiura

February 2, 2012

Whoa - two posts in one day!

I want to be up to date "ish" before our cruise TOMORROW! Hopefully upon return I will have the time, computer power, and motivation to post in a timely manner. Until then...

Rakiura is a country club, I suppose, but you can also buy a day pass. We went ahead and got a years membership. At the price of a daily pass we figured we would come out even in no time. The pictures below are just of the water park. When it cools off a bit we'll add some tennis, horseback riding, golf... for now it's all water in this heat!

The fun kinda rain!

Kiddie pool area. Which is still fun for my kids.

This tower has a slide in it that is like a rocket! I took some photos but I'm thinking they are on Mike's camera. Anyone find that cord yet?

Slide wall. Blurry but you get the idea.

Wave pool.

See saw in the wave pool. There were atleast 6 kids, that we came with, all lined up on this thing for a great shot and I ran for the camera. Of course they were gone 5 seconds later.

The spaceship, as my kids like to call it. That's Max in royal blue with his buddies Sean and Jimmy.

Climbing up on this thing is a workout!

Pretty Nicole resting in the waves.

WATER SLIDES!!!

Gotta love the action shot.

Max gives Rakiura a big "thumbs up"!

PHOTOS!!

February 02, 2012

Okay so that was a P.I.T.A!!! For some reason blogger decided that I could load 1, maybe 2, photos at a time. Went through like 5 rounds of failures before trying the singles. Not sure if it's my computer or them but WOW that's annoying!

Ok so here are some photos of the trip to the Jesuit Missions. My camera died part way through the road trip so you don't get to see the whole evolution of road to, um, path-like trail. But you'll get the picture. Ha ha I'm so funny...

So this is how the road started. Minus the cows and other random farm animals crossing it was a nice road. Much better in quality than those in Asuncion.

Then we downgraded to cobblestone. Which is romantic in thought. Our house is on a cobblestone street. In practice it's just annoying.

You can see here where the dirt road begins. It's nice and wide and packed at the beginning but really turned into more of a rutted trail by the end.

Are we supposed to DRIVE over that? And this is a "nice" one. Later it was not more than 2 half rotted boards going over a ravine. Mike told everyone to "think light".

You cannot tell from the photo but there is a fairly significant steep drop into water down below. I really need to find Mike's camera cord...

The first Mission we visited. Well maintained/restored.

The second Mission not as well built but still cool.

I wish modern day buildings had more architectual details and interest.

Have you seen my head?

Maggie going into the crypt. I walked a few steps down and passed. It was like a billion degrees outside and so indside was humid, smelly and like a sauna. Did I mention creepy?

One of many artifacts found on the grounds.
