Maggie's school put on a "play" and parent social hour today. I use the word play loosely. Really folks, I know they are 2 - 5 years old but this was S. A. D. saaaaaad. I was going to post the video of Maggie's teacher "explaining" how this so called play developed but you all really don't want/need to see that. The problem is the Montessori Philosophy of self directed learning taken a bit too far. Apparently because the kids were interested in flowers and how they grow the school chose this flower play theme. BUT, the kids decided how THEY wanted to participate. If they wanted to say something, great, but THEY decided what to say. If they wanted to get up and move or dance, great, but THEY decided how and when. You get the picture. The kids are mostly 2 and 3 years old. Really? My Maggie LOVES to talk, dance, sing etc... but she sat on her bum looking bored too. What part did she like? The part where she got to sing - duh! How silly of her not to write her own script. Really it was no big deal and she looked waaay cute but for that kind of money I expected them to try and show off a little. NOT!
Maggie's class

I also got a video of them singing a song in Spanish but the battery on my camera died so it didn't copy yet. It was cute. The above song and the Spanish one were the highlights of the show.
That and my mom took us to lunch afterward.
THANKS MOM!!!

Those ice cream shots are FANTASTIC! I hope you are still scrapping.
Are you going to be in DC still the first week of July? When do you leave?
She's so big!!! OMG! I love the Montessori concept in MANY ways, but it can really be a bunch of existential BS at times, too! lol
Max is handsome as always and Maggie is really showing how dang gorgeous she is going to be. You're in trouble. It's a good thing her Daddy's a Marine.
Thanks Judy, I got a new camera and I LOVE it! It takes THE best photos AND now I have video function too :o)
Morgan, yes the Montessori "concept" is good but it really does turn into "existential BS", well said! You don't want to know some of the CRAZY ideas I had to go around them on when potty training! But she IS learning a lot and happy so I can get past some of the BS.
That's kind of how I felt about it with Austen, too. Many, many years ago when he was actually small, he went to Montessori. It gave him some great foundations for being proactive in his learning. It gave him great confidence in his ability. When he moved on from Montessori, he learned different things. They've all added together nicely. Well, up until he turn into a teenager then it all fell apart *sigh*.
dude your camera is awesome.
and i LOVE her shirt! also the fact that she was inclined to provide the 'entertainment' when the show got too slow.
so funny!!!
This is why the montessori method scares me....I love the ice cram pictures!
I just cackled like a hag when I saw the "stripping" pics.
That's awesome.
Yeah...the Montessori method is probably not the best for staging a play. Not when you're 3. Who knew?
I enjoyed visiting your blog. I found you while visiting CF Husband. I'm trying to decide on a private school for my son so good luck with Montessori:)
